WHAT IS PICANTO.CA?

Picanto.ca is a streaming service for music that is contemporary, creative and Canadian.

Music and sound artists submit their video or audio recordings. Viewers can play them as a livestream or as archived video-on-demand. It is always free to join, there is both free and paid content, and artists keep most of their profits from paid content. Join us!

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WILL I FIND HERE?

Picanto.ca presents music that’s often hard to find on other streaming services. This includes diverse genres and traditions such as jazz, new indigenous music, chamber and orchestral European art music, experimental and improvised music, Japanese gagaku, Indonesian gamelan, India raga, sound art, musique actuelle, electroacoustics, opera, and more. WHAT IS THE COST TO WATCH VIDEOS ON PICANTO.CA?

It is always free to register. Some music is free, some is available as pay-per-view, which we call Premium. Find the balance that works for you.

DO I HAVE TO REGISTER TO WATCH VIDEOS?

Some free content is available without registration – discover, listen, play! But you must register to access certain features such as Premium (pay-per-view) content. Registering allows you to keep track of your purchased music, create playlists, receive e-updates and more. We hope you join us.

HOW DOES PAY PER VIEW WORK?

Pay Per View is a system where a viewer must pay a fee to view a program. It is an alternative to a subscription model, which would involve a higher fee up front and more commitment. With pay-per-view, you only pay for what you want to see and hear. On Picanto.ca we call this Premium content.

CAN I DOWNLOAD MY VIDEOS?

No, at this time you can only stream videos on Picanto.ca

WHO IS BEHIND PICANTO.CA?

Picanto.ca was created by and for Canadian music lovers. It’s a cooperative project of the Canadian Music Centre, a registered not-for-profit arts company representing Canadian composers and distributing their music worldwide. The project was supported by the Canadian New Music Network and Le Vivier, initiated and spearheaded by Canadian composer and electric guitarist Tim Brady, and the development of the site was funded by a grant from the Canada Council's D...View More

WHERE DOES PICANTO.CA'S REVENUE GO?

As part of our commitment to fair pay for artists, the majority of all revenues earned from all pay-per-view fees are paid directly to the legal owner of the videos, which generally means the artists or the production company. Picanto.ca retains a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue to cover a portion of ongoing operational costs such as administration, promotion, technical maintenance, and upgrades.

HOW CAN I GET MY MUSIC ON PICANTO.CA?

Register as an Artist or Organisation — a Content Partner — and the process is begun. You fill out your profile, send us your recordings or URLs via our on-line submission system, decide if you want free play or paid views, and if the fit is right you are up and running.

WILL I BE COMPENSATED FOR VIDEOS I SUBMIT TO PICANTO.CA?

Absolutely. You will be paid royalties via SOCAN and if you decide to submit files as Premium (pay-per-view) content you will also receive a share of the revenue that stems from your plays. As the submitter and owner of the video you retain all full legal rights to the video. Picanto.ca is committed to the fair payment of artists and all collaborative partners.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FREE AND PAY-PER-VIEW FOR THOSE WHO PROVIDE THE VIDEOS?

Pay-per-view content needs to be exclusive to the Picanto.ca site. However, the fee charged for pay-per-view and the duration of the exclusive nature is decided upon by the artist/owner of the video, in consultation with Picanto.ca. Content offered to viewers for free is non-exclusive, and can be hosted on as many platforms as you like. WHAT IS THE REVIEW PROCESS FOR SUBMISSIONS?

Picanto.ca wants to make sure that we are offering our viewers the full range of innovative music within our mission. HOW DO I MANAGE MY ARTIST PROFILE?

Sign into Picanto.ca and you have access to your Content Partner portal. There you can add and modify your biography, add web links, submit works for consideration, and look at all your statistics, such as the number of views per work, or royalties paid.

CAN I CANCEL AND DELETE MY ACCOUNT?

Yes, you can cancel your registered account at any time, but you will not be able to access any of your personalized content or lists. However, you can always browse the limited Free material.
