The vision of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is to be a leading performer, promoter and developer of big band music in Canada and beyond. Presently entering its 25th season, the WJO presents an annual concert series in Winnipeg that has featured some of the top jazz artists and composers in the world, including Bob Brookmeyer, Rufus Reid, Bert Joris, Dick Oatts, John Riley, Bobby Shew, Butch Miles, Curtis Fuller, Ken Peplowski, Christine Jensen, Tommy Banks, Phil Nimmons, David Braid and many others. In addition, the WJO has been active in the creation of new works for big band (over 150 compositions and arrangements to date). Following the release of the WJO’s fourth recording Suite 150: A Big Band Portrait, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra received a nomination for “Jazz Artist of the Year” at the 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards. A new recording (“Twisting Ways”) was released on May 7, 2021, and has been receiving strong reviews in Europe and North America.
